Abstract

Tetranychus turkestani is one of the destructive pests of greenhouse crops, especially cucumber. Phytoseiid mites are the most important predators of plant mites used in biological control programs. The predatory mite, Amblyseius swirskii is an active predator for pest control in greenhouses. In this research, biological parameters and the predation rate of A. swirskii on nymphs of T. turkestani were investigated on three cucumber cultivars including, Piro (resistant), Kurazh (semi-sensitive), and Radvin (sensitive) under laboratory conditions. The results showed that the predatory mite developed successfully on T. turkestani. The maximum lifespan of female individuals was observed in the Piro cultivar (36.59 days). The intrinsic population growth rate (r) for the predatory mite, A. swirskii on the three cultivars Piro, Kurazh, and Radvin was calculated as 0.1243, 0.1466, and 0.1553 day-1, respectively. The average predation rate of adult female predatory mites on the cultivars Pirro, Courage, and Raduin was calculated as 353.90, 295.32, and 283.36 preys, respectively. Results showed that the resistance of cucumber cultivars to T. turkestani can affect the efficiency of A. swirskii. Although the susceptible cultivar produced the most favorable life table parameters for A. swirskii, the resistant cultivar supported more A. swirskii individuals and had higher levels of predation on T. turkestani. Therefore, integrating resistant cultivars with A. swirskii could enhance the efficacy of T. turkestani control in cucumber. However, host plant resistance to the T. turkestani may alter prey quality, thereby affecting certain life-table parameters and the biological performance of this predator.
